Avril Lavigne will perform in Manila in February

Concert producer Wilbros Live has confirmed that Canadian singer-songwriter Avril Lavigne will return to Manila for a one-night concert in February.
"[This is] good news to all Avril Lavigne fans, as the queen of pop-punk is coming over to bring her much-awaited The Black Star Tour in Manila on Feb. 16, 2012, live at the Araneta Coliseum," Wilbros Live said in a statement released last Thursday.

This will be her third visit to the country.
Ms. Lavigne was last in Manila in September 2008 for a concert at the Araneta Coliseum. Before that, she first performed in Manila in a concert at the Fort Bonifacio Open Grounds in Taguig in March 2005.

Ms. Lavigne kicked off The Black Star Tour in Asia last May with a concert at the Shanghai Grand Stage in China. She then went on to have more than 50 concerts across the world, with stops in key cities in South America, Europe and North America.

After the Christmas holidays, Ms. Lavigne will resume The Black Star Tour with five concerts in Japan starting on Feb. 4, before closing the concert tour with her one-night gig at the Araneta Coliseum.

For the concert, expect Ms. Lavigne to perform cuts from her latest album, Goodbye Lullaby, including the lead single "What the Hell."

Of course, the singer will also perform her other hit singles like "Sk8er Boi," "Complicated," "My Happy Ending," and "I’m With You."

Since day one of her musical career, Ms. Lavigne has always chosen not to play it safe.

When she entered the music scene at 17, she refused to resort to skin-baring come-ons, preferring to entice the record-buying public with her powerhouse voice, high-spirited melodies, and straight-talking lyrics.

Staying true to herself and putting music before image paid off both critically and commercially for the Canadian-born artist.

In 2002, Ms. Lavigne shot to global pop stardom with the album Let Go, followed by 2004’s Under My Skin, and 2007’s The Best Damn Thing.

This week, Facebook announced its “Memology 2011″ list of celebrities with the fastest growing pages and most popular media for the year. Napanee’s Avril Lavigne was the top Canadian performer listed in the music category, and third internationally – behind singer Rhianna, who took the top spot, and the legendary Bob Marley at number two.Facebook’s Data Team compiled the list using a number of factors, including the number of “likes” earned by the musician, their profile growth, and popularity in the media. So, although the top ranked performers may not have lead in any individual category, their overall scores were enough to surpass those with a clear lead in “likes” or other individual categories.

Justin Bieber may have been most people’s guess for the top Canadian in music when it comes to social media, but since the list relies prominently on growth – or the increase since the beginning of 2011 – Lavigne’s activity this past year garnered a lot of points.

In March, the singer-songwriter released her first CD in four years, “Goodbye Lullaby,” which reached number 4 on the Billboard chart and its first single “What The Hell” entering the Top 10. This release – after a relatively long absence on the charts – can be attributed as one of the main reasons for the boost in activity (ie. “likes”, links to media articles, videos, etc) on Facebook.

She was also frequently in the news this year, with recent reports that included an Illinois man on trial for killing his mother because she didn’t buy him a ticket to an Avril Lavigne concert, a delay in arriving to one of her London performances due to an unspecified security incident, and most recently being the victim of an assault – along with her boyfriend, Brody Jenner – while leaving a Los Angeles hotel.

Lavigne has remained in the news over the past month with the release of her third single “Wish You Were Here” which she has promoted on a number of morning shows along with an appearance at the televised American Thanksgiving parade.

She also had a brief cameo in the video for Rhinna’s song “Cheers (Drink To That)”, which includes a sample from Lavigne’s 2002 hit “I’m With You”, and is now in the studio working on her fourth album.

Avril broke onto the music scene at the age of 17 with her debut album Let Go. The 27-year-old singer and her ex-husband reunited last night over dinner at Italian eatery Madeo in West Hollywood.

Whibley, 31, had a big reason to celebrate: his band, Sum 41, was just nominated for a Grammy award in the Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance category.
Avril couldn't resist tweeting her support for her ex yesterday, writing: 'CONGRATULATIONS @Sum41 for your Grammy nomination!!!!! So f***in cool. You guys deserve it!'

Avril wore a black denim jacket and an odd star-covered denim trousers; a grey hood covered her long blonde hair.

Deryck wore simple black pants and a T-shirt underneath a denim jacket, but added some flair by perching a captain's hat on his clown-coloured hair.

A dinner date for the two is nothing new, given that they also took a holiday together in Saint- Tropez this past summer.

She recently opened up about her oddly close relationship with her ex.

'I respect Deryck so much as an artist, and he produced several songs on [her new record] Goodbye Lullaby,' she told MTV.

'He did a really amazing job. We're great friends and I'm grateful for the relationship.'

Avril's boyfriend Brody Jenner also appears to be cool with the fact that she's so friendly with her ex-husband.

Singer Avril Lavigne recalls life as a hockey star

Long before she sang about "Sk8r Boi," Avril Lavrigne was a skater girl.

The goal-oriented Canadian hit the ice not long after she learned to walk, and by age 10 she was playing in the boys' hockey league in her small town of Napanee, Ontario. She went on to play for the girls' hockey and baseball teams at Napanee District High School. But at age 16, she hung up her skates after signing a recording contract, and by 17 she had broken onto the music scene with her debut album, "Let Go." It sold 16 million copies and catapulted her to international stardom.

The 27-year-old pop-punk princess, who is scheduled for three shows over the next two weeks, took a break to tell us what happens when the gloves come off.

ESPNHS: What was it like growing up in a hotbed for ice hockey?

AVRIL LAVIGNE: My dad had me on ice skates in the backyard pond when I was 2 years old. Everyone plays hockey [where I'm from]. I grew up at the hockey arena because my older brother, Matthew (who's now 28), played so I wanted to play. I would watch his games while wearing his jersey and cheering on the side with pompoms. Having him to look up to made me to want play sports.

ESPNHS: Did you play both ice and street hockey?

AL: I played ice hockey on a team; street hockey for fun. I did Novice, Atom, Pee Wee ice hockey. When I got to Pee Wee at age 10, I started playing with the boys. I [earned] MVP honors two years in a row as a right wing. In high school, I returned to girls’ ice hockey and started pitching for the girls’ baseball team. One year, we won a tournament and I got a purple trophy for my pitching. I still have it in my bedroom trunk.

ESPNHS: What was your fave ice hockey move back then?

AL: I worked on my wrist shot and slap shot a lot. One time I had a breakaway in a game and scored. My dad caught it on tape. That was probably my big shining moment. I also remember getting into fights with the goalies and hearing cheers from the moms [in the stands] because I was the only girl. Whenever I’d get punched by a guy, I’d always punch back. The gloves came off!

ESPNHS: Most embarrassing moment on the ice?

AL: You know at the end of a game when you line up and say “good game” [to the opposing players]? When I was 10, a girl on the other team pushed me because I was the only girl on my team. I fell because I was on my skates and didn’t expect it. Later, I waited for her outside her dressing room to talk. We made up.

ESPNHS: Do you still play?

AL: On tour, I bring my Rollerblades to play street hockey — usually with my brother. People in Los Angeles aren’t as into hockey, but they surf and skateboard. I was big into skateboarding when I was in high school; I did all the tricks and stuff. Now I just ride. I can’t afford to break my leg.

ESPNHS: Where do you surf?

AL: Australia, the Bahamas, Hawaii. There’s actually a video of me surfing in Australia. YouTube it: “Avril Surfing in Australia at Manly Beach.”

ESPNHS: Would you ever do a show on Rollerblades?

AL: People have brought it up, but I prefer to do cartwheels on stage.

Avril Lavigne Says 'Wish You Were Here' Single 'Feels Right'

Avril Lavigne lets her guard down on her Goodbye Lullaby single "Wish You Were Here." The poignant track is about pining away for that one person you let slip away. The emotional pull of the track, produced by Max Martin and Shellback, is the perfect tune for anyone who's not able to be with the ones they love this holiday season. "I'm excited about 'Wish You Were Here' being the single because it's a ballad and the song kind of represents the album definitely more so than the first single," she told MTV News about the song, which she performed during the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade last week. "That was kind of more my older stuff and more pop rock and aggressive and a lighter subject. Goodbye Lullaby, for me, was a record that I was writing for myself."

"Wish You Were Here" and its simple, Dave Meyers-directed video really sum up the album for Lavigne. "It was more raw and stripped-down and more emotional and I wasn't holding back," she said of working on the album. "[It's] sort of more song driven and the production was mainly just like a lot of acoustic guitars and loops and just all about the vocal; the vocal being clear and having an honest emotion to it. And saying that, yeah, the first two singles ['What the Hell' and 'Smile'] were more pop rock, and so now finally with this one, 'Wish You Were Here,' being released, it feels right."

The song comes from a place deep inside and is very much about someone in Lavigne's life. "I love this song. I like this song because I wrote it about missing somebody and that's something that we all go through at some point in our lives," she explained. "It's just about looking back and remembering all those good times you shared with somebody, all the crazy moments. And that's life. We all experience that at some point, but it has a positive message."

Avril Lavigne Security Scare, Loses Voice at London Concert

Avril Lavigne, currently on the European leg of her Black Star tour, was late tonight to a London concert due to a security incident that she later wrote made her “scared for (her) life”.In addition to hitting the stage more than a half hour late, the singer eventually lost her voice with a few songs still remaining in her set list. Concert goers posted that her voice continued to crack during her hit song “Complicated”, which eventually led Lavigne to give up entirely – holding the microphone towards the crowd, who enthusiastically picked up where she left off and completed the song.

Although some reports indicated the songstress became emotional as the concert wound down, others – including fans in the front row – wrote that she seemed in good spirits and appeared bemused, though frustrated, with her fading voice.

UPDATE: Avril Bandaids, the top Avril Lavigne fan site, has posted amateur videos from tonight’s concert, including this video by Youtube user “Popgoer” showing Avril Lavigne good-naturedly struggle through her final song, “Complicated”, with help from the audience.

Lavigne finally admitted to fans who packed the HMV Hammersmith Apollo that she had had a bad day and couldn’t sing any longer before leaving the stage.

The singer’s Twitter posts before and after the show revealed an unspecified security incident had delayed her arrival, and she most recently posted to Facebook that “Shortly before my show tonight, there was a breach in security and now the police are handling (it)”.

Fans were united in expressing condolences and well wishes to the star online, and “Feel better Avril” became a worldwide trending term on Twitter – which the singer acknowledged and thanked fans for on her own Twitter account.

Premiering late last night on Youtube is the music video for Avril Lavigne's single "Wish You Were Here." The song is Lavigne's 3rd official single from her Goodbye Lullaby album, released in March.

On twitter, Avril described the music video as "Simple but emotional. Raw and real. Stripped down." The video features a tearful Lavigne singing alone in an empty room, eventually moving on to her doing the same in a water-filled bathtub. In the tub, Avril's fully clothed (unfortunately), so apparently that's not what she means by "stripped down." I do agree that it's a simple, yet effective video that showcases the ballad well.

Avril Lavigne & Brody Jenner: Paris Pals

Making the most of their time overseas, Avril Lavigne and Brody Jenner were spotted out and about in Paris, France today (September 16).

The “Sk8er Boi” songstress and her handsome beau did some sightseeing and shopping ahead of Avril’s concert in the City of Lights tonight.

Ms. Lavigne is coming off of a successful showing at the 2011 Mercedes Benz New York Fashion Week with her line Abbey Dawn.

It’s a full on cry fest. Aw, Avril! We’re sorry you’re so sad. But we’ve been there and we know the feeling of missing the one you love. The video is striking because it’s so spare — there are hardly any props, save for a flower and a tub. It allows the singer’s emotions to become the centerpiece, along with her voice. Avril is solo for the entire video, and of course, she is rocking her great hair and her flawless smoky eyes. She is in an abandoned industrial space, picking petals off a flower before setting it on fire. Jeez, Av, what did that flower do to you? Why did you set the poor thing ablaze?

Wearing just a black slip dress, the strap of which falls off, the singer demonstrates her unhappiness by crying. Avril Lavigne insists this year's New York Fashion Week will be the best yet.

The 26-year-old Canadian songstress is famed for her mix of edgy punk and girly glam, and regularly wows with her rock aesthetic. Her love of fashion saw the launch of her own clothing line, Abbey Dawn, three years ago.

Avril is preparing to show her new collection at New York Fashion Week this month, and the stunning star is excited at the prospect.

"I've had my line for three years now, and I really feel like this is the best season yet," she told The Huffington Post."It takes a while to tweak stuff to where I want it to be, but this season is the best yet. I have footwear, swimwear, eyewear, accessories, women and men's collections. I've done Fashion Week before, but this year it's going to be even better."

Avril came up with the idea for a clothing line when she was 19-years-old. The singer says her music and fashion go hand-in-hand.

"After the release of my first album, I realised how much fashion was involved in my musical career," she explained.

"With a lot of the designs, I try to tie in some of my lyrics and more musical elements."

It was recently revealed that TV personality Kylie Jenner is set to make her New York Fashion Week debut on the Abbey Dawn runway on Monday.

The 13-year-old model-and-reality-TV-personality is famed for appearing on hit show Keeping Up With The Kardashians alongside half-sisters Kim, Kourtney and Khloé Kardashian and the rest of their family.

Kylie is said to have got the nod for the show thanks to her stepbrother, Brody Jenner, whose is Avril's boyfriend.

Staring at the ceiling, the pop rock singer was anything but interested in getting affectionate with the 27-year-old former Hill's star at Boa Steakhouse last night. The couple were enjoying a low-key dinner at the eatery when Brody attempted to tenderly kiss her on the lips.

The pale blonde laid slumped in her chair as he literally tried to initiate a romantic moment, to no avail. Both pair were dressed down for their Sunday night out.

Avril slipped on a black and white oversized t-shirt and wore her hair in a low-key pony tail, while Brody was comfortable in a checked flannel shirt and his customary backwards baseball cap.

Avril and Brody have been dating since February last year, and have since been enjoying a whirlwind romance. They have been spotted loved-up all over L.A. and professiong their love for each other with numerous tattoos.

Tickets for the Shanghai concert will cost from 180 yuan (US$28) to 1,280 yuan.

Earlier this year, Lavigne released her fourth album "Goodbye Lullaby" that features the lead single "What the Hell." She is expected to sing the hit tune along with other favorites such as "Complicated," "I'm With You," "My Happy Ending" and "Girlfriend."
By 2009, Lavigne had sold 16 million albums worldwide. Her success has continued with "Goodbye Lullaby," which has reached top 10 lists in both the United States and the United Kingdom. It was also her third No. 1 album in both Japan and Australia.

The 27-year-old singer has said in the past that she likes rock music because it's radical and fun, but now that she's a little older, she hopes "Goodbye Lullaby" will show her mature side.

Remembered as a pint-sized teenager chasing skater boys in combat pants all those years ago, the Canadian singer has discovered a new sense of happiness as her pop career's matured.Currently dating The Hills actor Brody Jenner, Lavigne is back with a new album and a promise to Australian fans that a full tour is on its way.

"I think I'm having more fun in a lot of ways," Lavigne told AAP during a promotional visit to Sydney, which includes a rooftop performance for 2Day FM.

"You live and you learn and as you get older you learn about life and enjoy yourself more.

"As far as work goes I've perfected a lot of things and I'm now doing exactly what I want to do."

Since she last toured Australia in 2007, Lavigne has launched a clothing range, Abbey Dawn, two fragrances and a charity, The Avril Lavigne Foundation, which supports children and youth living with serious illnesses and disabilities.

In between, the 26-year-old found time to record a fourth record, Goodbye Lullaby, which stormed to the top of the ARIA Album Charts on its release last month.

While the album saw Lavigne stretching her studio skills, the majority of the production duties fell to her ex-husband, Sum 41 guitarist Deryck Whibley.

The pair split up at the end of 2009 after a three-year marriage but Lavigne insists he remained the obvious choice to work alongside.

"I feel really grateful because we have a really good relationship and we really care about each other," she said.

"To have him as part of this record and producing on it was really awesome because he's very talented and he did a great job."

The false story about Lavigne was created at “Global Associated News”, a website where visitors can enter a celebrity’s name to get a randomly generated selection of news stories created for that celebrity- most reporting death or injury – with a corresponding and authentic looking article page to go with them.While many of these generated story pages have lengthy details and made up quotes related to the incident, the one used in this recent hoax about Lavigne is in the style of a ‘breaking news’ story – the article’s three paragraphs ending with: “Additional details and information will be updated as it becomes available. This story is still developing “.

Along with a believable ‘newsy’ appearance, each story page likewise includes a Twitter button to tweet/post the story to friends and followers; potentially spreading the false article even further across the internet – possibly even becoming viral, as other readers also link to the story on their blogs, Facebook pages, etc.

Coincidentally, about the same time Lavigne’s snowboarding death hoax was circled the globe on Twitter (the article page’s Tweetmeme ‘retweet’ button indicates more than 4000 people have posted a link), her boyfriend Brody Jenner posted messages – and a graphic photo – to his Twitter account, reporting he had received a deep cut from his surfboard while surfing in Hawaii.

Based on his posts, it appears his arm was cut by the fin on his surfboard while catching the first wave of an inbound swell. He later had the wound stitched up and lamented the fact he wouldn’t be able to play golf or surf for the next week. The 26-year-old singer took beau Brody Jenner, 27, home for a family Christmas in her native Canada.

The couple were spotted at Pearson International Airport in Toronto yesterday having disembarked a flight from Los Angeles.Hill's star Brody's father is Bruce Jenner, husband of Kris Kardashian. They were met at the airport by Avril's older brother Michael and his wife.

But before they arrived Avril sat on the ground outside the terminal and inspected a large red mark on her knee.

Avril Lavigne promises to properly debut her new single, What the Hell, during Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve on Dec. 31. The song - the lead single off Lavigne's upcoming Goodbye Lullaby (March 8), is a glossy and pumping (and just a tad bratty) pop-rock track.

"This song is the least personal song to me off this album," Lavigne blogged back in November, telling fans what they could expect from the single.

"It's a fun and funny anthem. It has a broad message about personal freedom. It is the most pop track on the record."And while it was easy to interpret that statement as Avril-style aloofness a month ago, now that a teaser of the lyrics has been released, could Lavigne's statement be partly a disclaimer, given her divorce from Sum 41's Deryck Whibley.

"Canadian Idol" terror suspect in court

OTTAWA, Ontario — A terror suspect who appeared on the TV show "Canadian Idol" made a brief court appearance on Friday, and police said they arrested a fourth man in an alleged plot to build bombs.The "Idol" contestant, Dr. Khurram Syed Sher, 28, is charged with conspiracy to facilitate terrorist activity. Police said they seized 50 circuit boards intended for use in remotely detonated bombs. Two other men allegedly involved in the plot had appeared in court on Thursday.

Sher appeared on the reality show in 2008 singing a comical version of Avril Lavigne's "Complicated," complete with dance moves that included a moonwalk.

The bearded father of three, a pathologist in Ontario, appeared nervous during his Friday court appearance. He was ordered to appear again before the court on Sept. 1 via video feed.

Lawyer Anser Farooq told reporters outside the courtroom his client had just been flown to Ottawa on a federal police aircraft and was anxious to return to his family.

"He's OK. I mean, he's just been brought over, separated from his family," Farooq said. "We're hoping to address the main concern, which is getting into the court and hear the concerns (prosecution) has, and get him back to his family as soon as possible."

Royal Canadian Mounted Police Sgt. Marc Menard said the fourth person arrested has not yet been charged. Police did not give his name but confirmed the arrest was part of an investigation that began last September known as "Project Samossa."

Police said the three suspects already charged had been working together since February 2008 and alleged that they conspired to "knowingly facilitate terrorist activities"

in Canada and abroad. Police said the plot ranged from Canada to Iran, Afghanistan, Dubai and Pakistan, but did not elaborate.

Police said they moved in on the men to prevent them from sending money to terror groups in Afghanistan.

The others charged are Hiva Mohammad Alizadeh, 30, and Misbahuddin Ahmed, 26, of Ottawa Ahmed is an X-ray technician at an Ottawa hospital.

Alizadeh studied English as an additional language and electrical engineering technology at Red River College in Winnipeg.

All those arrested are Canadian citizens.

Terror Suspect Performs Avril Lavigne on 'Canadian Idol'

Khuram Sher was arrested by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Thursday as part of a terrorism investigation, but the bust wasn't the 26-year-old's first time in the public eye. In 2008, Sher appeared on "Canadian Idol" where he performed a rendition of Avril Lavigne's hit song "Complicated" for the judges that included moonwalking and doing "the robot."Sher told judges on the popular reality show in 2008 that he hailed from Pakistan and was a fan of “hockey, music and acting.”

He sings an off-tune rendition of Avril Lavigne’s “Complicated” with – as the show’s website describes – some “nifty” dance moves.

“Have you ever thought of being a comedian?” asks one of the judges of the 26-year-old.

Another remarks: “The dance moves were good, the singing, bad.”

One source close to the investigation said Sher was actually a Canadian-born physician and graduate of McGill University – quite a different persona from goofy contestant wearing a traditional Pakistani shalwar kameez and pakul hat as he performs robot dance moves and a Michael Jackson moonwalk.

Two other alleged members of the group police believe were trying to form a local terrorism cell appeared in an Ottawa court Thursday.

Hiva Alizadeh, 36, is charged with conspiracy, committing an act for terrorism purposes and providing or making available properties for terrorism purposes.

The tall, thin Alizadeh appeared in court wearing a bushy beard and glasses, with a knitted skull cap and an open-neck checked shirt.

Misbahuddin Ahmed is charged with conspiracy and other unspecified terrorism charges. Ahmed, who was born in 1983 and stands about five feet, 10 inches tall, wore a dark, neatly trimmed beard and a beige pullover in court.

"He is in shock. That's all I can say," Ahmed’s Ottawa lawyer Ian Carter told reporters after the appearance.

Sean May, lawyer for Alizadeh, said the charges against his client were very serious.

"He seems to be taking the matter seriously and obviously very concerned about it," May told reporters.

"They are very serious charges, no question about that. They are the most serious charges you can face except for a murder charge," he said.

Both men were put over for a video appearance on Sept. 1.

Ottawa’s Integrated National Security Enforcement Team had been tracking the men for months and one of the suspects is alleged to have ties to high-level Al Qaeda affiliates abroad, sources close to the case told the Toronto Star.

Known as “Project Samosa,” the RCMP investigation reportedly began with intelligence passed on by the Canadian Security Intelligence Service.

The plot involved Canadian targets but was not “specific,” said a police source, adding that the arrests happened quickly since one suspect was planning to travel abroad. The alleged ringleader had reportedly travelled earlier to the border region between Pakistan and Afghanistan in search of training.

A news conference in Ottawa is scheduled for Thursday.

Ahmed had worked for two years as a general radiography technologist at Ottawa’s Hospital Civic Campus.

Guy Morency, the hospital’s director of diagnostic imaging, told the Star in an interview that Ahmed was a “stellar technologist.”

“We’ve had no complaints about him,” he said.

Morency said he had only met Ahmed a couple of times in meetings and described him as rather “nondescript.” But he did recall that Ahmed was able to provide “excellent” references from Montreal before he was hired.

“We were very pleased with what we heard and received and he has proven himself since.”

Morency, who was on vacation this week, said he would go into the hospital Thursday to speak with the department’s employees.

“Obviously this is going to be upsetting for a lot of people.”

Neighbours living on the west-end cul-de-sac where the 26-year-old suspect lived with his wife and baby said the raid was shocking.

“I live two doors down. It’s very scary,” said neighbour Janice Burtt.

Burtt said she believed the young Muslim couple had lived in the townhouse for about six months.

“I’d wave and say hello but I don’t think they gestured to me at all,” she said.

Nathan Aubie, who lived beside Ahmed, said he had only seen the couple three or four times but that “they seemed like friendly people.”

A second location, a seven-storey apartment complex about five kilometres away, was also raided early Wednesday. The windows of the apartment police searched were covered with patterned embroidery and five police cruisers still idled outside the building late in the day.

Some within Canada’s Muslim community said they were angered by Wednesday’s arrests, while others cautioned against indicting the accused before any evidence is known.

Salma Siddiqui, the Muslim Canadian Congress vice-president said in a telephone interview that she was “livid and frustrated” that young Muslim men were still being seduced by the idea of fighting a holy war in the name of Islam.

“It has to stop,” she said.

“Why are they not understanding that this is not acceptable? Why are they still going on accepting the doctrine of jihad? That is the where the whole problem is.”

It is the second time since 9/11 that an RCMP Integrated National Security Enforcement Team has arrested a group of Canadian suspects planning to strike at home.

In June 2006, a group of young Muslim men dubbed the Toronto 18 were rounded up and prosecuted for plotting to attack downtown targets and a military base north of the city.

Of the 18 who were charged — 14 adults and four youths — 11 were eventually convicted. Charges against seven of the accused were dropped.

Zakaria Amara, one of the group’s ringleaders, pleaded guilty last year, confessing that he had been developing a series of bombs for the attacks that he hoped would force Canada out of Afghanistan. He was given a life sentence.

The case was seen as a wake-up call for Canadians and heralded as a successful test of the country’s anti-terrorism laws, which were introduced after 9/11. It was also held up as a model of co-operation between the Mounties and CSIS — organizations that had been plagued for years by mistrust and rivalry.

Critics of the Toronto18 case accused the RCMP of casting the net too wide and questioned whether police informants inside the group had unduly influenced the suspects.

While there are no known ties between the Ottawa suspects and those arrested in Toronto, the cases may have similarities in the way they were investigated — and play out in court.

Some of the details in the case hint that police will present a case of what’s commonly called “homegrown terrorism,” meaning Canadian citizens who become radicalized in the West and then often seek connections and training abroad.

Reacting to the arrests, a spokesperson for Public Safety Minister Vic Toews said the case shows “Canada is not immune from international or homegrown radicalization.”

“Our government monitors national security concerns and is vigilant in protecting against any threats,” spokesperson Christopher McCluskey said.

“As for operational security matters, and matters currently under police investigation, we cannot further comment at this time.”

Said the group in a statement Wednesday, "Knowing that they are unable to deliver their signature high energy show, Sum 41 made the tough decision that a break is needed while Deryck begins rehabilitation for the slipped disc."Whibley, 30, who split from Avril Lavigne in September 2009 after three years of marriage, was assaulted by three men after playing the Summer Sonic rock festival in Japan last week, according to reports.

The injury aggravated a prior disc injury from 2007. "He is expected to make a full recovery with the necessary treatment and rest," the band continued in a statement.

Deryck Whibley Sum 41 has decided to pull out of the Vans Warped Tour while Deryck Whibley recovers from injuries sustained after being attacked in Japan. "Knowing that they are unable to deliver their signature high energy show, Sum 41 made the tough decision that a break is needed while Deryck begins rehabilitation for the slipped disc," the group said in a statement Wednesday.

Three men attacked Whibley in a bar in Japan, where the band was playing the Summer Sonic rock festival, E! Online reported. Last Friday, the band posted an update, saying, "After an MRI scan, it appears Deryck has slipped a disc in his back once again. Despite doctor's instructions, he has decided to play today's show at Summer Sonic regardless."The incident aggravated a previous disc injury from 2007.

"[We] are very disappointed that we have to pull off the tour. [But] we know that it would be more frustrating for the fans if we can't give it our all," drummer Steve Jocz said. "Deryck is doing everything he can to get himself better and we're there for him."

Sum 41 was also forced to cancel three Warped Tour appearances last week after Whibley came down with a severe case of bronchitis that threatened to damage his voice.

Whibley married fellow singer Avril Lavigne in 2006. The couple announced on September 17, 2009, that they had separated. Lavigne initiated divorce proceedings in October 2009, claiming "irreconcilable differences."

This weekend Avril Lavigne gave fans a peek into the studio she music producer Alex Da Kid have been working in while the singer recovers from a bout of strep throat.

In the video featuring Lavigne – along with Alex Da Kid and an unnamed female (who Avril nicknamed “Grizzly Bear”) – she gives a brief tour of Hanson Studios in Hollywood, where she is recording new songs for her 4th album.

In her commentary, Avril reports they have been working for ten straight days until 2 am and even 6 am into the morning.As she posted on her Twitter account earlier in the week, Lavigne still has strep throat – which prevented her from singing for the previous 48 hours under doctor’s orders – but stated she is feeling better and has started to record again. She and the other studio members could be seen wearing surgical masks to prevent transferring the affliction to the others.

The big news: Lavigne isn’t looking to repeat the success of 2007’s smash single “Girlfriend,” nor is she looking to maintain her status as punk-pop’s snotty princess. On the as-yet-untitled November disc, Lavigne says she’s aiming for a more introspective sound with a stripped-down rock record driven by acoustic guitars.

“Life, that’s what this record is about,” Lavigne tells Rolling Stone. “It’s so easy for me to do a boy-bashing pop song, but to sit down and write honestly about something that’s really close to me, something I’ve been through, it’s a totally different thing.” Even though Lavigne is stepping away from the power-punk, she still packs the catchy hooks on songs like “Darlin’,” which was the second song Lavigne ever wrote as a 15-year-old living in Napanee, Ontario. Skater Boy singer Lavigne was still wearing her wedding ring as she and Whibley, 29, wandered through the aisles of Bristol Farms, in Beverly Hills, on Saturday. And Whibley, the lead singer of punk band Sum 41, was a true gentleman, carrying two bags of food out to the car.

Lavigne, 24, wore denim dungaree shorts, baseball pumps and a New York Yankees hat for the shopping trip.

"They certainly didn't look like they were in the middle of a break up," said an onlooker.

"They looked like any other normal couple doing their weekly shopping."
